Kansas Historical Society Online TourPart 3
Artifacts entering our collections are cleaned and numbered. Staff members and volunteers creates collections records that include the donor's name, the item's history, and any other pertinent information that may prove valuable to researchers. Not only researchers use our collections. Many items are loaned to other historical agencies and museums around the country.
In our spacious conservation laboratories (left), conservators prepare artifacts for exhibit and conduct treatment on pieces that require attention. Find more information about preserving your own collections.
Newspapers and other paper collections are copied in our Microfilm laboratory. Microfilming collections makes the information available to far-away researchers who can borrow the film through interlibrary loan.
People enjoy visiting our sites because many are located in natural settings. The Kansas Historical Society headquarters in Topeka is surrounded by acres of prairie and woodlands teeming with native wildlife. View the history and natural history of northeastern Kansas on our Nature Trail. Like the Center in Topeka, many of our State Historic Sites around Kansas feature walking trails and picnic areas. We also administer tours at the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka. Parking is free at the Kansas Historical Society headquarters and at our state historic sites. Thank you for taking this online tour. We hope that the tour has persuaded you to visit our Topeka home as well as our State Historic Sites. If you'd like to help us with our mission to collect, interpret, and preserve Kansas history, please consider becoming a member of the Kansas Historical Society. Our Membership page gives information on joining the Society and membership benefits. Spend some time browsing other topics on our web site and place yourself in Kansas history! Tour 1 Tour 2 |
