Scope and Content

Scope and content: Microfilm created of forty-two bound volumes of Real Property Tax Assessment Rolls (1858-1879). Tax records are arranged by location and are not indexed by individual owners' names. Tax assessments identify owner's name, property location (township section or city lot and block), number of acres, total value of property, taxes assessed (county, township, school, road), collectors' fees, and the total amount of taxes assessed to that property's owner(s). A Remarks column usually indicates when taxes were paid.

Notes

General Note: Records for 1860, 1869, and the second volume of 1877 are missing. Until 1872, tax records for all Jefferson County townships were kept in single volume at a time. After 1872, three volumes were used: 1) Oskaloosa, Union, and Jefferson; 2) Grasshopper/Valley Falls, Rock Creek, Ozawkie, and Fairview; 3) Kaw, Kentucky, and rural Sarcoxie. Researchers looking for tax rolls for years following 1879 should contact the Jefferson County Clerk in Oskaloosa, Kansas.
