Administrative History

Administrative History: Established by the Kansas Legislature on March 25, 1875, Elk County, located in southeastern Kansas, was named for the Elk River that traverses its area from northwest to southeast. As of the 2000 census, the population of Elk County was 3,261 and its primary industries are farming, ranching, and oil and gas production. The county is composed of Howard (the county seat and most populous city) and these townships: Elk Falls, Greenfield, Howard, Liberty, Longton, Oak Valley, Painterhood, Paw Paw, Union Center, and Wildcat.
