Administrative History

Administrative History: Pratt County, located in south-central Kansas, was established in 1867 but not organized constitutionally until 1879. It was named for 2nd Lieutenant Caleb Pratt of Company D, 1st Kansas Infantry. Pratt was killed at the Battle of Wilson's Creek in 1861.

The original count seat was Iuka, but this was not recognized due to fraud allegations, and Pratt became the county seat. Pratt County's townships are numbered, 6-12; the county had named townships--including Banner, Carmi, Center, Elm, Gove, Grant, Haynesville, Iuka, Lincoln, Logan, McClelland, McPherson, Naron, Ninnescah, Paxon, Richland, Saratoga, Springvale, and Valley--but these are all now defunct.
