Administrative History

Administrative History: Cloud County was organized in 1860 under the name Shirley County, in honor of the colonial Massachusetts governor William Shirley. In 1867 the county name was changed to Cloud to honor Colonel William F. Cloud, of the Second Regiment of the Kansas Volunteers.

Concordia is the county seat; it was established in 1872 and was the location of a German prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. Townships in Cloud County include Arion, Aurora, Buffalo, Center, Colfax, Elk, Grant, Lawrence, Lincoln, Lyon, Meredith, Nelson, Oakland, Shirley, Sibley, Solomon, Starr, and Summit Township.
