Scope and Content
Scope and content:
Albert Clyde and Joseph Acre, of WaKeeney, Kansas, served in the American Expeditionary Forces, 35th Division, 137th Infantry, Company M, in France during World War I. This collection includes primarily the letters of Joseph Acre during that campaign and gives the researcher an idea of what life was like for the American “doughboys” serving in the trenches. Upon reading his letters, one gets the idea that his thoughts were concentrated more on matters in his native Kansas and on the plight of not receiving much mail from his family, rather than detailed insights of “trench life.”
Other series in this collection include letters of Ella Keith, Laura Allegree and Anna Dickey (pertaining mostly to genealogical matters); genealogical notes on the Acre family; and newspaper clippings. Though the bulk of the items center around Joseph Acre’s World War I letters, the other items do offer data on the rest of the family.
Contents: Ser. 1. Letters -- Ser. 2. Genealogical information -- Ser. 3. Miscellaneous -- Ser. 4. Newspaper clippings.
