- L. Martin Jones
Martin Jones was born in Osage City, Kansas December, 1922. After graduating from Osage City High School, he continued to the University of Kansas. While at KU, Jones joined the Reserve Officers Training Corps, anticipating our eventual involvement in the War already raging in Europe. He and his parents agreed that he would have a better chance of picking which branch of the service he served in if he were already involved in ROTC. He joined the Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft class, but by the time he was called up, it was clear to military officials that our coastlines weren't in danger, so Jones was sent with the 106th Infantry to Belgium. As a replacement, he ended up on the Belgium/German border, right in the middle of the Battle of the Budlge. He shares his recollection and a unique perspective on the battle. (Transcription not yet available.) This interview is part of the Kansas Veterans of WWII Oral History grant project that was funded by a bill passed by the 2005 Kansas Legislature. It was conducted by the Rice County part of the project.
