Kansas Museum of History - You Are Here: Putting Kansas on the Map

The current special exhibit at the Kansas Museum of History, You Are Here: Putting Kansas on the Map, continues through June 24. Enjoy the best maps from our collection in this showcase of Kansas places.  This unique exhibit will present many maps that are rare and seldom displayed. It also offers art work and objects related to maps and map making.

Pawnee Indian Museum - Ledger Art of the Cheyennes and Kiowas

Ledger Art is a term for Plains Indian narrative drawing or painting on paper or cloth.  This form of art was popular primarily from the 1860s to about 1900.  Two plains tribes that produced the majority of the art were the Cheyenne and the Kiowa.  Explore this temporary exhibit, featuring several large colorful examples of ledger art including Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Pawnee warriors in battle and in daily life. Pawnee Indian Museum is located at 480 Pawnee Trail, eight miles north of U.S. 36 on K-266 near Republic. For more information call 785-361-2255.

Shawnee Indian Mission - Kansas Day

Join us for a commemoration of the 151st anniversary of Kansas statehood and discover the role the mission played in Kansas history. Local volunteer actors will present a reading of the melodrama Badness on the Banks of Brushy Creek by playwright Don Carlton. The performance will be followed by a reception. An afternoon performance of this show will be held at Grinter Place State Historic Site. Shawnee Indian Mission State Historic Site is located at 5403 W 53rd, Fairway (Kansas City area). Grinter Place - Kansas Day

Join us for a commemoration of our state's 151st birthday. Local artists are invited to participate in our Kansas Day art contest. Contest winners will be announced at 1 p.m. and winning designs will be on display through February. We'll also have craft projects and will cook cupcakes and corn muffins on the Grinter kitchen wood stove. Children can participate in a state symbol craft activity and enjoy old fashioned toy and other demonstrations. Local volunteer actors will present a reading of the melodrama Badness on the Banks of Brushy Creek by playwright Don Carlton. The performance will be followed by a reception.
