Backward Glance:
Images from Marshall County
Kansas Museum of
History
Special Exhibits Gallery
January 11 -- February 24, 2008
In the process of earning a living, small-town photographers
often document the history of their communities.
Backward Glance showcases the work of Omar Hawkins, an otherwise
unknown photographer based in Marysville, Kansas. Hawkins' images capture
a sweet slice of small-town pie in the early 20th century.
A commercial photographer, Hawkins earned his living by shooting images
of baseball games, restaurants, gas stations, and other scenes of everyday
life in both his town (Marysville) and surrounding communities in Marshall
County. His work offers a nostalgic snapshot of several Kansas towns
at the turn of the 20th century.
The Hawkins collection of photographs was donated to the Kansas Historical
Society by Dennis Richardson of Marysville, who purchased these images
from the photographer himself. Backward Glance is a selection
of interesting and fun photos of a time-gone-by, chosen by the Society's
curator of photographs.
