Sports bring people together!
Many people cheer for the team in their own backyard because it connects
them with their neighbors. Game Faces explores the reasons
for the immense popularity of sports, particularly
the role games have in creating community among people who often don't
have much in common.
A number of important objects are featured, including some from famous
Kansas sports figures:
- Wilt Chamberlain's basketball jersey
- Jim Ryun's track shoes
- Al Oerter's discuss and singlet
- Lynette Woodard's basketball jersey
- Footballs signed by Barry Sanders and John Riggins
- NFL helmet and jacket worn by Jack Christiansen
. . . and much more.
Visitors to Game Faces enter through a stadium
with bleachers in front of a Jumbotron-style screen running clips from
Kansas sports history. Each section of the exhibit is designed around
a sports feature--town baseball presents its information and artifacts
in a dugout. There also are sections on 8-man football
(popular in rural areas were the population cannot support 11-man teams),
Kansas Olympians, rodeo competitions, and other sports traditions in
Kansas.
Interactive,
hands-on areas throughout the display offer visitors places to sit,
view sports clips, and play Kansas sports trivia. "A House
Divided" is an interactive fan's room filled with both
KU and K-State souvenirs, complete with big-screen TV. In short, Game
Faces has something for every sports fan.
Don't miss this fun, interactive display!
