The Legacy of Kansas Territory

Right answer!

Blacks did not leave Kansas after the Civil War.
Instead, they came here because of Kansas' reputation as a place of racial tolerance and opportunity.
Benjamin Singleton
Benjamin "Pap" Singleton led many Exodusters to Kansas.

As life in the South worsened for Blacks after the Civil War, many left for more promising lands. Thousands came to Kansas in a great exodus during the 1870s. They became known as "Exodusters."

The Exodusters believed in Kansas' reputation as a place of racial tolerance. They were poor, and the chance to buy cheap land was especially attractive.

In reality, though, the land of freedom was something of a paradox for African Americans. Whites provided some assistance to the destitute Exodusters, but prejudice and the sheer numbers of Blacks migrating to Kansas caused racial tensions to flare.
