The Legacy of Kansas TerritoryRight answer! Blacks did not leave Kansas after the Civil War.Instead, they came here because of Kansas' reputation as a place of racial tolerance and opportunity.
As life in the South worsened for Blacks after the Civil War, many left for more promising lands. Thousands came to Kansas in a great exodus during the 1870s. They became known as "Exodusters." The Exodusters believed in Kansas' reputation as a place of racial tolerance. They were poor, and the chance to buy cheap land was especially attractive. In reality, though, the land of freedom was something of a paradox for African Americans. Whites provided some assistance to the destitute Exodusters, but prejudice and the sheer numbers of Blacks migrating to Kansas caused racial tensions to flare.
