Julia Stinson, a woman of Shawnee and French heritage, was married to a White businessman.
Indians were pushed aside to make way for land-hungry settlers. They lost most of their lands as settlers moved into the West.

Some Indians who adopted White ways were accepted into society, particularly if they married well-to-do Whites. Today, though, only small reservations remain for a few of the tribes that once lived here.
