Power, Place, and People: African American and Indigenous StoriesThe exhibit Power, Place, and People: African American and Indigenous Stories was produced with research from a larger project called "Shifting Borders of Race and Identity." This project explored shifting borders that define identity-specifically those identities that straddle the borders of American Indian and African American heritage. How do people with these dual heritages think about who they are and what this dual heritage means today? The exhibit, Power, Place, and People: African American and Indigenous Stories, features eight oral history interviews with African American, Indigenous (American Indian), and mixed people discussing their concepts of their own identity. Their stories are placed within the larger context of historical, social, and cultural themes. This exhibit was produced by students from the University of Kansas, Haskell Indian Nations University, and Johnson County Community College with funding from the Ford Foundation and the Kansas Humanities Council.
