Capturing the Times

Capturing the Times: Photographs of the Farm Security Administration 1936-1941

Between 1936 and 1942 the federal government employed photographers to create a visual record of the Great Depression. This remarkable "file" of documentary photographs went far beyond public relations shots. These powerful images tell the stories of Americans as they worked toward recovering from the Great Depression. The exhibit features rarely-seen FSA photographs taken in Kansas, including Dust Bowl scenes, images of striking miners, farm auctions, and 4-H club fairs. Produced by the Kansas Historical Society.

Continuing the Tradition: Mexican American Folk Art

Folk arts are those art forms which have been passed down from generation to generation. They provide a sense of identity and continuity with the past. Some folk arts are practiced because they reenforce a sense of community in an ever-changing world. Others continue because individuals choose to honor the ways of their parents. Through contemporary color photographs, the exhibit, Continuing the Tradition: Mexican American Folk Art, explores the traditions which are practiced by Mexican Americans in Kansas today. Pinata making, bread dough flower making, crochet work, and foodways are highlighted. Produced by the Kansas Historical Society with partial funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
