Maine is the first state to pass prohibition.

1880
Kansas is the first state to outlaw the manufacture and sale of alcohol through a constitutional amendment.

1919
National prohibition amendment is passed.

1933
United States repeals prohibition amendment.

1948
Kansas repeals statewide prohibition.

Pictured above, temperance leaders and supporters rallied at Bismarck Grove near Lawrence, Kansas, in 1878. They supported John P. St. John, the Republican nominee for governor who eventually helped Kansas pass its constitutional amendment for prohibition.
