Moments of Glory

Introduction

If you've ever moved, you probably realized that people collect things. Image of a trophy.

If you've ever tried to clean out a closet, you know that many things are hard to part with because they have special meaning.

Souvenirs, family photographs, trophies, and diplomas all are significant reminders of moments in our lives. We acquire these things in different ways. Trophies and diplomas, for example, are given to us as rewards for our hard work and special capabilities. They are usually given in particular ways and in special settings, and they publicly confirm certain beliefs we hold about ourselves.

Moments of Glory is about commemorating and condoning certain achievements. The objects we use, give, and save validate common values held by members of our society. The individuals who are rewarded serve as an embodiment of those values.

People take pride in their achievements. Kansans are no different. Whether it is a memento from a trip or a gold medal for bravery, the objects take on special significance. This exhibit explores achievements of ordinary, as well as famous, Kansans and how they have been rewarded.
