Wow! That Oughta Be In a Museum!

Out of the Ordinary

Ordinary objects often take on special meaning when they become part of a collection. WenDee LaPlant, Finney County Historical Society, Garden City

One example is the collection of exaggerated postcards at the Finney County Historical Society Museum.

When a swarm of grasshoppers descended on Garden City in 1935, local photographer Frank "Pop" Conard had a vision. Through trick photography he made a montage of humans with giant insects and printed the image on postcards. They sold like hotcakes.

Conard continued to print exaggerated postcards in a variety of scenes until his retirement in 1963. Shortly afterwards his camera, photographs, and many postcards--both normal and exaggerated--entered the museum's collections.

The museum has continued to add postcards to its collection as they become available.
