Fraternal Orders

Fraternal orders abound in Kansas as in other states. They are men's organizations which were often formed for altruistic purposes. Examples include the Freemasons, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), and their women's affiliate, the Rebekah Assembly, the Ancient Order of United Workmen (AOUW) and the Knights of Pythias (KP). These groups print lists of their members' deaths which are called necrologies.

The Kansas Historical Society keeps indexes to these necrologies in the reference area in our reading room. The combined indexes to the IOOF, Rebekah Assembly, AOUW and KP (not the Freemasons) are also available online. To search this online database click here.

In most cases the indexes contain the member's date of death and lodge number to which he or she belonged at the time of death. The location of the lodges can be determined by checking the lists that appear at the front of each index (locations are included in the online index). The lodge's location can be used as a probable death and/or burial place. With this information, a newspaper obituary may be found.

The following is a list of the indexes that are available in printed form in our reading room. These are not available for interlibrary loan. Please refer to our ask a research question page for information about ordering copies from these:

These are separate and unrelated fraternal organizations. The AOUW was an early fraternal insurance group and the Knights of Pythias was a lesser known secret fraternal order.
