This is a concise version--there may be more information in this or other sources. Lucile CarterLucile Carter of Topeka, Kansas served the City of Topeka and Shawnee County for 40 years. She was first employed in the County Treasurer’s office for eight years and then moved to the City Fire Marshal’s office for eight additional years. She was elected Clerk of the Shawnee County District Court in 1949 and served 12 consecutive two-year terms in that office. At the end of her tenure, she had held the office longer than any other person. Ms. Carter joined the Women’s Army Corps (WAC’s) in July 1943 and served three years during World War II. Two of those years were in England with the 8th Air Force. She was the first woman veteran to hold elected office in Shawnee County. Lucile Carter was very active in professional and community organizations. She had been president of the Kansas Clerks of District Courts Association, state chairperson of Kansas Republican Veterans Club, president of Legal Secretaries of Topeka Association, matron of the Eastern Star and also active in the Methodist Church, American Legion and the Business and Professional Women’s Club. Ms Cater died on April 14, 1976 at the age of 73. She had been a lifelong resident of Topeka. Sources: The vertical file is on forty-three microfilm reels arranged alphabetically
