KSHS and the Genealogical Society of Utah

Since 1985, the Kansas Historical Society (KSHS) and the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU) have been working jointly to preserve important genealogical records through a mobile microfilming project. KSHS makes initial contacts with local Registers of Deeds, County Clerks and Clerks of the District Court introducing them to this service and preparing records inventories. GSU then provides the camera operator, film inspection and duplication services. When filming is complete, copies are deposited at KSHS and the GSU's Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Copies are also available at any GSU branch library or through interlibrary loan via KSHS.

The project began in the southeast corner of the state and is making it's way westward (As of 2000 we had filmed just over 30 counties and are currently working in the southcentral region of the state). There is no charge to local governments for this service. Groups may purchase copies of this film through GSU, but must first obtain permission of the local records custodian (i.e. Register of Deeds, etc.) Only certain records are covered by this project. Please see the records eligibility list. Please be aware that not all local government records in a given county will be filmed. Some have been lost, destroyed or are in such poor condition that filming would be ineffective. Also, some counties choose not to participate in this project.

Finally, not all local records on microfilm are the product of this partnership. KSHS has filmed some records independantly in its microfilm lab. KSHS also purchases film and receives donations.
