County Seat:Wichita
Origin of Name:In memory of Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick (1813-1864). A career soldier, Sedgwick fought in the Seminole and Mexican Wars and served in territorial Kansas, on the Mormon Expedition, and in several frontier Indian campaigns. While commanding 6th Corps in the Army of the Potomac, he was killed by a Confederate sharpshooter at Spotsylvania on 9 May 1864, shortly after assuring his troops that the rebels "couldn't hit an elephant at this distance."
