Kansas Archives Week 2002
Genealogy Expo

The Genealogy Expo was a hit!

People came from as far as Michigan and Arkansas to celebrate Kansas Archives Week 2002 at KSHS on Friday and Saturday, October 25 and 26.

Seven staff and volunteers helped seventy-three patrons on Friday night learn more about “Getting Started”. Some people present had never done genealogical research before. One hour was devoted to how to get started and what was available in the research room, and the second hour to hands-on application of what they had just learned.

Saturday saw ninety of the one hundred and one pre-registered attendees, thirty-one non pre-registered attendees, and seventeen individual persons within eight vendor/exhibitor groups/organizations. Sixteen staff and volunteers effectively and happily served the seating capacity crowd (as per the original floor plans). Attendees had the opportunity to listen to the featured speaker, Dr. Sam Dicks, attend their choice of six sessions, and visit with the exhibitors or purchase from the vendors. Many feel the very reasonable cost of attendance ($5), excellent beginning to intermediate genealogical programming, and the Library/Archives Archives Week 2002 Committee’s diligent efforts to publicize the event over the past six months helped to draw the record numbers.

Here are what some attendees had to say: “I feel the whole day was well planned and well prepared. Everyone did an exceptional amount of work and was helpful.” “Keep it up!” “I very much appreciate your offering this help.” “Thank you. Well organized and very worthwhile.”

The Committee included: Justin Dragosani-Brantingham, Chair; Scott Leonard, Sara Keckeisen, Mary Beth Figgins, William Grace, and Bobbie Athon.

The events took place Friday, 6-8 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Center for Historical Research, 6425 S.W. 6th Ave., Topeka, KS 66615.  For more information, please call the Library/Archives Division at (785) 272-8681 ext. 276 or review the updates as they are available on our website at www.kshs.org.
