John Martin

Politician. Democrat. Born: November 12, 1833, Wilson County, Tennessee. Died: September 3, 1913, Topeka, Kansas. Served in U.S. Senate: March 4, 1893, to March 4, 1895.

John Martin, who became the leader of Kansas' struggling Democratic Party, was born on November 12, 1833, in Wilson County, Tennessee. He settled in Tecumseh in 1855 and six years later opened a law office in Topeka. The first Kansas Democrat elected to the U. S. Senate, Martin died at his Topeka home in September 3, 1913.
