Cool Things PodcastCool Things podcasts win MUSE Award!

The Kansas Historical Society's Cool Things podcasts received an honorable mention MUSE Award from the American Association of Museums Media and Technology Committee. "Engaging hosts, lively music, and interesting and eclectic topics" were noted by the judges, who added that our regular feature, "Six Degrees of William Allen White," are "a clever way of engaging listeners and encouraging feedback."

Spring Meeting 2008KSHS, Inc. Annual Spring Meeting

Join us June 6 & 7 in Garden City and Dodge City for the 31st annual spring meeting. Highlights include tours of the Finney County Museum and Lee Richardson Zoo, a presentation on Truman Capote and Harper Lee, and stops at Cimarron, Santa Fe Trail ruts, and Dodge City Depot. Field School at Pawnee Indian Museum State Historic Site

A rare opportunity to try archeology first hand!

Join us May 31-June 15 for the Kansas Archeology Training Program field school at the Pawnee Indian Museum near Republic. Volunteers range from those with little or no archeology knowledge to professionals with decades of experience. You can join them for this great hands-on experience! Volunteer for one day or the whole field school. Children age 10 and older are welcome to participate (those under 14 must be accompanied at all times by a responsible adult). Register today!

What's New at the Kansas Museum of History

John YardA Career Army Man - Colonel John Yard

Just inside the doors to the gallery, you'll find our "What's New" display. Throughout the month of May, display will feature items pertaining to Colonel John Yard, who served from the Civil War through the Indian Wars, including a post with the Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th U.S. Cavalry. The display features Yard's dress helmet and photographs, recently donated by a descendant.

Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains The Spring 2008 issue features "'Knowledge is Power: The Reverend Grosvenor Clarke Morse's Thoughts on Free Schools and the Republic During the Civil War," "'Are We Ready for the Conflict?': Black Abolitionist Response to the Kansas Crisis, 1854-1856," "'The Colored People Hold the Key': Abram Thompson Hall, Jr.'s Campaign to Organize Graham County," and "'You have to like people': A Conversation with Former Governor William H. Avery." This issue also features plenty of book reviews and book notes. Kansas Kaleidoscope. Real People. Real Stories. For Kids! The April/May Kaleidoscope is called "Tree-mendous Trees!" Have you ever thought about how important trees are to our world? If we didn't have trees, where would birds build their nests? What would we burn in our fireplaces? Readers can explore the importance of this natural resource. Kaleidoscope is only $8 for a year's subscription, five issues during the school year.
Kansas Preservation The March/April 2008 issue includes "Old Barn Illuminates Flooding," "The Case of the Missing Headers," "Photography for Archeologists," and a calendar of upcoming archaeology happenings. Reflections The Spring 2008 issue features articles about War correspondent Peggy Hull Deuell, Populist papers, the Quindaro township, and an eyewitness account of a 1928 tornado. Regular features include "Save our History," "History's Heroes," and a calendar of Kansas Historical Society events.
