New Additions to Our Collections

January - June 1997

Here are some highlights of the many artifacts that entered the collections of the Kansas Museum of History during this six-month time period. Photo of curator and donor.

Rifle and spurs used by Charles Sickler on his ranch near Coldwater, Ks., during the early 1900s. Pictured is Charles Endres presenting his grandfather's Winchester rifle to Blair Tarr, Museum Curator.

Dowsing rods from a Tonganoxie, Ks., dowser or "water witch."

Festival button from the Chanute Mexican Fiesta of 1962, with the slogan "Preserve & Revive Mexican Culture."

1870s frock coat worn by Mathias Rickard (1845-1923), who was an evangelist preacher in Kansas during the last 25 years of his life.

Telegraph wire from the early 1860s. Immediately placed on display in the Visitor Center at the Hollenberg Station State Historic Site.

Surveyor's compass, chain, and tripod used in surveying for the railroads, mid-nineteenth century.

K-Mart "Ecology I" brand backpack. Used when donor's family hiked the Grand Canyon in 1974. Backpack contents included foil or "space" blanket and plastic rain poncho.

Saddle from family ranching operation in Rooks and Logan counties (northwest Kansas) at the turn of the twentieth century.

Three lengths of irrigation siphon tubing from the Kansas State University Experimental Field.

A wall safe from a 1950s Valentine Diner originally located in Tribune, Ks.

Colt revolver used by Pvt. George Cook of Company I, Eleventh Kansas Cavalry, during the Civil War. Cook was a participant in the Price's Raid incident.
