Background

State Archives & Library

Many voices have told stories of Kansas. Since 1875, the Kansas Historical Society has worked to collect and preserve the stories that record the richly textured history of the place we call Kansas. Visitors are invited to explore, discover, and remember.

The State Archives & Library, opened to the public in 1995, features a large research room with clerestory windows and soaring ceilings. Researches have access to an ever-growing, extensive collection of more than four miles of books and periodicals; 67,500 cubic feet of manuscripts, records, and newspapers; a half-million photographs; and 58,000 rolls of microfilm.

From letters written by our most memorable figures, such as John Brown and Carry Nation, to records that document family heritage, the research room has the most comprehensive collection of historical documents in the state.

Items in the collection include photographs; letters and diaries; newspapers; videos, film, and sound recordings, books and periodicals, maps and architectural drawings, state and local government records, and genealogical research materials.

In the research room is a small changing exhibit case. The Library Gallery in the lobby features changing photo exhibits.

The Kansas Historical Society is located at 6425 SW 6th Avenue in Topeka, just off exit 356 on Interstate-70. The Library is open 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday. Admission to the Research Room is free. For more information call 785-272-8681, ext. 117; TTY 785-272-8683; www.kshs.org.
