This 80,000 square foot facility incorporates a Research Room and Gallery
and houses the Kansas Historical Society's administration, cultural
resources, historic sites, library and archives, and publications offices.
Research Room for public research (7,500 square feet)
Gallery (700 square feet) for photo exhibits
Three storage bays for Library and Archives collections (30,000 square feet)
Two classrooms (900 total square feet)
Three laboratories, archeology, photography, and microfilm (3,250 total square feet)

Building exterior is clad with native cottonwood limestone
Roof is stainless steel terne with a 200-year life expectancy
Lobby and Research Room are open, two-story spaces bordered by a mezzanine and topped with skylights and clerestory windows
Exposed wooden trusses throughout the building
Lobby walls are clad with cottonwood limestone. Lobby floor is limestone from the Bayer quarry near St. Marys with slate insets
Quartersawn oak paneling clad the walls in the Research Room and public areas
State-of-the-art storage areas contain high density mobile shelving for optimal use of the space
Fully environmental conditioned, with additional controls in storage areas to meet current conservation standards
Total cost of construction, parking, and furnishings is approximately $12 million
