Alfred Fairfax
(1840-circa 1916)
- Born into slavery in Virginia, escaped and joined the Union army
- Moved to Chautauqua County in 1880
- Raised cotton and operated his own cotton gin as Fairfax Ginning Company
- Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Parsons
- Elected in 1888 as first African American to serve in the Kansas Legislature
