Includes government records, manuscripts, photos and other primary sources

The State Archives Division has four main catalogs:

  1. The Archives Catalog is the main place to look for primary sources. It includes government records, personal papers, records of organizations and businesses, and other unpublished materials (more). For detailed lists of the Menninger Foundation Archives see the Menninger database. If possible, please let the staff know when you will be visiting to use these collections so they can have the material pulled in advance.
    • Most of these collections have not been digitized; for our digitized materials see Kansas Memory.
  2. ATLAS has records for books, pamphlets, and other materials cataloged after 1994 at KSHS.
  3. The newspaper microfilm database includes all our newspapers available on microfilm.
  4. Our Card Catalog dates from 1875-1993 and is not searchable online.

Most of the descriptions in the Archives Catalog are for individual manuscript collections and State Archives records series (groups of records that result from a shared function or activity, have a particular format, or were kept together for some other reason). The database includes general descriptions of records of individual state agencies and counties as well as manuscript collections. Descriptions of more detailed groups of materials, microfilm rolls, and some individual items are also included, particularly for records, photographs, maps, and drawings of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway and subsidiaries and items on Kansas Memory.

The catalog can be searched by keywords; titles; creators; and unit identifiers (UIDs), the unique number given to each record. Keyword searches include descriptive notes, titles, and subjects. Searches may be limited by material types such as manuscripts or government records. At the present time, the catalog is limited to manuscripts; government records; and selected non-governmental architectural drawings, maps, and multimedia collections.

The results displayed give contents information for most of our unpublished materials.  For small collections and records series, only basic information is included at the present time.  Additional descriptions and details such as box and folder lists are added as time and staffing permit.

For help using these records and collections, please contact our reference staff.

The preparation of this database was made possible, in part, by a basic processing grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
