Bartholomew was a resident of Rooks County and Hays, KS. He was a horticulturalist, internationally known for his work with fungi. He was active in republican party politics, local government, the United Presbyterian Church, farm organizations, and experimental farming. Served as teacher, clerk of Rooks City Dist. Court, etc. A professor at Fort Hays State College.

Diary: Jan. 1863 - Dec. 1864. Converse was in the 39th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company C, and kept part of his diary while a Confederate prisoner of war, first at Andersonville, GA, and later at Florence, SC. Included are the original diary entries of 1863 & 1864 and an edited transcript for the same years, prefaced by a summary of his military service in 1861 & 1862.

Harrouff came to Kansas from Illinois in 1873 and settled in Lone Tree Twp., McPherson County, KS. He helped organize the Centennial Literary society in McPherson and was active in grafting fruit trees and other agricultural pursuits on his farm. In late 1899, he moved to Washita County, Oklahoma, and settled on a farm.

Diaries presumably written by members of the Judd family. One describes working on a military railroad during the Civil War in Virginia and the District of Columbia. The other was written by a sergeant in the Union Army in McClellan's Peninsula Campaign of 1862 and describes battles, his capture and imprisonment, and his life as a soldier.
