- Born in Piqua to a traveling vaudeville family
- First appeared on stage in 1899
- The Butcher Boy in 1917 was his first film
- He was known for dead pan comedy and featured in more than 100 films
- His two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame were for movies and television
