C. B. Schmidt

- Born in Germany, immigrated to U.S. in 1864
- Settled in Kansas in 1868 as a grocer
- Served as land agent for the Santa Fe railway
- Influenced thousands of German Mennonites to settle in Kansas in 1870s
- These Russian German families eventually populated central and western portions of the state
