Cool Things - Grassland Rhapsody Engraving
Grassland Rhapsody is the title of this wood engraving by a Kansas-born and bred artist who used the prairie as his subject.
E. Hubert Deines (1894-1967) was a Kansas artist known for his wood engravings. Born near Russell, in the north central part of the state, Deines showed early artistic talent. He studied for several years at the Kansas City Art Institute, and later, after military service during World War I, at the Julian Academy in Paris.
Returning to the United States, Deines joined the staff of the Kansas City Star and Times as a commercial artist. In 1932, he began a free-lance career, specializing in producing wood engravings. Among many career honors, Deines was selected to serve on the midwestern regional committee to select graphic art for display at the 1939 New York World's Fair. He was a member of the influential Prairie Print Makers.
This 12" by 8" engraving is in the collections of the Kansas Museum of History. It is part of a small art collection donated by the Kansas Federation of Women's Clubs in 1983.
