Bartholomew was a resident of Rooks County and Hays, KS. He was a horticulturalist, internationally known for his work with fungi. He was active in republican party politics, local government, the United Presbyterian Church, farm organizations, and experimental farming. Served as teacher, clerk of Rooks City Dist. Court, etc. A professor at Fort Hays State College.

He helped organize the Centennial Literary society in McPherson and was active in grafting fruit trees and other agricultural pursuits on his farm. In late 1899, he moved to Washita County, Oklahoma, and settled on a farm.

Peele came to Kansas from Indiana in 1879 and originally lived in Bourbon County nea Hiattville. He worked as a laborer and carpenter and for two railroads. Diaries cover 1879 - 1884, 1902.
