George F. Sternberg

(1883-1969)

  • Born in Lawrence, followed father’s career in paleontology
  • Began directing fossil expeditions in early 1900s
  • Internationally recognized paleontologist, curator of the museum at Fort Hays State University
  • Discovered “fish-within-a-fish” fossil in Gove County in 1952 (Xiphactinus audax)
  • Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays named for him
