James Maag earned a bachelor’s degree from Washburn University in 1961 and master’s degree from the University of Kansas in 1964.
He was president of the Kansas Bankers Association. He also handled government relations work for the Foulston Siefkin law firm of Wichita. Since retirement, he has continued to work on government relations with the firm.
Maag served four terms in the Kansas House of Representatives (1968-1976), the last two years as Speaker Pro Tem.
He serves on the board of the Washburn Endowment Association and the Kansas Oral History Project board. He is a former trustee of Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area, and former board member of the Kansas Guardianship Program and Kansas Grain Inspection.
Maag was first elected to the Kansas Historical Foundation Board of Directors in 2008. He was elected to the Executive Committee in 2009 and served as treasurer from 2009 to 2016.
