Dogs are an interesting way to look at history. They have hunted and herded, given their labors, and guarded homes and children. Like the early explorers and pioneers, our canine friends are a part of our past. Join us as we explore the history of these lovable companions.
Dogs on the Prairie
Dogs have a long history in Kansas. Many groups who traveled through Kansas were accompanied by dogs.
Working Like a Dog
When Kansas opened for settlement in 1854, families arrived with their belongings and often with the family dog. Although most dogs were pets, many of them provided a much-needed service to these frontier families.

Before fences dogs were used to help herd, or gather, animals such as cattle and sheep. Dogs that helped round up sheep were called sheep dogs.

When You Meet a Working Dog
Do you know the rules to follow if you should see a working dog, or service dog, in public? If the dogs are "on duty" they will usually be wearing a special collar or harness.
