Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) from Atchison, impressed the nation with her flying abilities. She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and the first woman to receive the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross.

"Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others."
