The Kansas economy in the 1800s included the very profitable long cattle drives from Texas to the railheads in Kansas along the Chisholm Trail. Cowboys drove the cattle to cowtowns like Abilene, where they were loaded on trains and shipped to larger cities in the East, which were in need of beef.
