Kansas Symbols
Traveling Resource Trunk
Pre-K through Fourth Grade
What do Ornate Box Turtles, Little Bluestem, the Western Meadowlark and "Home on the Range" all have in common? These are all some of the official state symbols of Kansas. This trunk explores these well known symbols as well as some lesser known ones. Did you know that Kansas has two state marches? Or, which variety of sunflower is the real symbol of Kansas? You will find the answers, and a lot more, as you use books, puppets, and a variety of activities to explore Kansas symbols.
The teaching manual contains 14 lessons. Kansas Images -- An Activity Book for Children offers an additional eighty activities. As students learn about Kansas symbols they might find themselves making a turtle hat, putting together a Kansas flag puzzle, doing a honeybee dance, or playing a board game. Oversize photos of official Kansas symbols and historical photos provide colorful wall art for your exploration of Kansas symbols. The variety of teaching materials in this trunk includes puppets, a section of honeycomb, books, and a Kansas flag puzzle.
The items contained in this trunk make it a great program addition in non-classroom settings. Youth groups find it useful in meeting badge or project requirements. The hands-on components lend themselves to discovery center areas in museums and libraries.
