Lela Barnes-Marjorie L. Crump Archival Internship

The Kansas Historical Society (KSHS) periodically offers the Lela Barnes-Marjorie L Crump Archival Internship for graduate students enrolled in Kansas colleges and universities and Kansas residents attending any graduate school. Recent graduates (December 2011 or later) with a master's degree or higher who are Kansans or attended a Kansas school are also eligible to apply. This internship is designed to provide summer or fall semester work experience for a graduate student or recent master's or doctoral level graduate interested in pursuing an archival career. The intern will be introduced to archival arrangement and description and possibly other activities working with the society's manuscripts collections. A stipend accompanies the eight-week internship, which is available beginning in June each year. Funds for this internship are provided by a bequest from Lela Barnes, KSHS curator of manuscripts 1936–1962, and Marjorie L. Crump, a descendant of Kansas pioneers who serves on the Kansas Historical Foundation board of directors.

In 2012 the internship will consist of eight weeks full-time work (320 hours) and a stipend of $2,500.  The chosen intern will assist staff working on a grant project funded in part by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission to describe a portion of the records of the Menninger Foundation.

Preferred qualifications:

By June 2012 applicants should have completed at least twelve graduate semester hours or equivalent in American history; American studies; archival, library, or information management; or museum studies applied toward an advanced degree in American history, American studies, archival administration, library/information or records management, or related fields. Applicants should have at least eight undergraduate semester hours or equivalent in American history.

Applicants must complete

Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work (unofficial copies are acceptable) and letters of recommendation from at least two references who have knowledge of the applicant's archival, historical, and/or academic skills are also required.

Application materials, transcripts, and letters of recommendation should be sent to:
