Mary E. Turkington lives in Topeka. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas William Allen White School of Journalism. She was executive director of the Kansas Motor Carriers Association.
Turkington has been a member of the Smithsonian Institution; Union Pacific Station restoration campaign; local and national press group; St. Francis Regional Health Center audit committee
She has served on numerous boards, including a chair of Kids Voting Kansas; president of Soroptimist Club; chair of St. Francis Hospital; president of Topeka Capitals semi-pro baseball team; chair of Red Cross of Topeka; chair of Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce; chair of the Kansas Society of Association Executives, and chair of the Kansas Turnpike Authority. She was inducted into the Junior Achievement Topeka Business Hall of Fame in 2014.
She is involved with numerous professional, civic and business committees, community, public affairs, transportation, historic, and health issues. She is interested in the state’s political as well as early state history.
Turkington was first elected to the Kansas Historical Foundation Board of Directors in 1998. She was elected to the executive committee in 2002 and served as president in 2006.
