Mexican American Experience in Kansas - Extension
Ideas for using this trunk with other ages and youth groups.
The teaching manual for this trunk is designed for use in a classroom with students in grades four through six. The materials contained in the trunk can be used with other ages and in other settings in a variety of ways as highlighted below.
Classroom Use
The following standards are included in the 2004 Kansas Standards for History and Government; Economics and Geography.
Third Grade
History, Benchmark 3, Indicator 1: Explains customs related to holidays and ceremonies celebrated by specific cultural groups in Kansas (e.g., Christmas, Cinco de Mayo, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Lunar New Year, Ramadan, St. Lucia, St. Patrick's Day).

Folk Arts - 2. A Picture Tells a Thousand Thoughts - Look at some old photographs of people. Examine the poses, clothes, and facial expressions.
- Mexican American Experience in Kansas includes over thirty photographs. Most of these are historic photos of Mexican Americans from Kansas.
Folk Arts - 3. Tell a Story - Practice the art of storytelling.
- This trunk contains a video of a Mexican American storyteller from Kansas telling stories she grew up with. The story "La Llorona" is included in Lesson 20: Cuentos.
Folk Arts - 5. Traditional Art - Learn an art form that was traditional for girls 75 years or more ago. Complete a small project using that art form.
- Use the "Crafts" booklet in the trunk to learn about nine traditional crafts and find instructions on how to do them.
