Read Kansas! Primary - P-15 I Live in Kansas!
This lesson, designed for third graders, teaches students about some of the communities in Kansas. Students will learn about ten communities and will retell information about one of those communities. Then students will have an opportunity to learn more about their own community to compare to these. They will retell the information by creating an advertising poster for one community. This lesson is designed to take place over four days but can be adjusted to fit the teacher’s needs.

Third Grade Kansas History Standards:
- Benchmark 2, Indicator 1: The student compares life in his/her community with another community (e.g., population/location, jobs, customs, history, natural resources, ethnic groups, local government).
Third Grade Reading Standards:
- Benchmark 4, Indicator 10: The student retells main ideas or events as well as supporting details in narrative and expository text.
Kansas College and Career Ready Standards (Common Core ELA):
- RI. 3.2: The student determines the main idea of a text; recounts the key details and explains how they support the main idea.
