Stan Kenton
(1911-1979)
- Born in Wichita, grew up in Colorado and California
- Learned piano at an early age and toured with bands as a teenager
- Formed his first orchestra in 1941
- Developed a progressive jazz style known as the wall of sound
- His orchestra was usually 19-piece, he also experimented with a 39-piece group
