Symbols & Images of Kansas
Traveling Resource Trunk - available through May 2012
Pre-K through 3rd grade
Kansas - the "Sunflower State;" the "Wheat State;" the land of Cottonwoods, aviation, Western Meadowlarks, tornadoes, Ornate Box Turtles, and Barred Tiger Salamanders! These are all symbols of Kansas, some official symbols and some unofficial. This trunk explores these, and other, symbols of Kansas.
The teaching manual contains twenty lesson plans for preschool through second grade students. Kansas Images -- An Activity Book for Children offers an additional eighty activities for young children. The lessons in the manual cover both the official and unofficial symbols of Kansas. As students learn about Kansas symbols they might find themselves making a turtle hat, putting together a Kansas flag puzzle, doing a honeybee dance, making a book about growing wheat, or recording the weather. Oversize photos of official Kansas symbols and historical photos provide colorful wall art for your exploration of Kansas symbols. The variety of teaching materials in this trunk includes puppets, a section of honeycomb, books, hats, a Kansas flag puzzle, felt board activities, and a board game.
The items contained in this trunk make it a great program addition in non-classroom settings. Youth groups find it useful in meeting badge or project requirements. The hands-on components lend themselves to discovery center areas in museums and libraries.
