African American Experience in Kansas

Traveling Resource Trunk - available through May 2012

Cowboy bootGrades five through eight

Students will experience Kansas through the words of Langston Hughes, the camera lens of Gordon Parks, and the music of Eva Jessye as they use this trunk.  The stories of these Kansans, along with other African American men and women who have made significant contributions, can be explored. Students will also discover the compelling history of the Buffalo Soldiers and learn about African American traditions.

The teaching manual contains twenty-eight lessons created for students from grades five through eight.  Many of the lessons may be modified for use with other age levels. The goal of the curriculum is not only to teach about African Americans and their place in Kansas history, but also to help students develop critical thinking skills through work with primary source materials and form their own interpretation of history. The focus is not only on the "facts" of history, but also the methodology. Although the curriculum is based in the discipline of history, it has many lessons that cross the curriculum lines. Math, art, anthropology, folklore, and literature lessons are included.

The items in this trunk make it a great program addition in non-classroom settings.  Youth groups find it useful in meeting badge or project requirements.  The objects and photos in the trunk bring additional meaning to programs sponsored by libraries, museums, and many other organizations.
