- Soldier, buffalo hunter, and entertainer
- Served as army scout in campaigns against the Kiowa and Comanche
- Earned name Buffalo Bill for supplying buffalo meat to railroaders
- Organized wild west shows; entertained audiences with roping, bronc riding, and buffalos
