William Stafford

- Born in Hutchinson
- While a graduate student at the University of Kansas, became a conscientious objector because of his religious beliefs
- Served in alternative Civilian Public Service in forestry and soil conservation during World War II
- Published 57 volumes of poetry
- Consultant in poetry for Library of Congress and Poet Laureate of Oregon
