Renovation

Historic Kansas State Capitol

In the Spring of 2000 the Kansas Legislature voted to begin the process of preservation and renovation of the Capitol by voting $40,000,000 for the first phase of a four-phase, nine-year project.

Upon approval of funding, Senate President Dick Bond said:

"What we have done here today will be valued by generations of Kansans as we restore to full glory the very symbol of Kansas statehood and Kansas pride."

During the planned eight-year renovation, repairs are being made to the crumbling limestone exterior, and to the marble and wood trim interior. Work on the Capitol's dome began in 1999. The work involved repairing roof leaks and, in 2000, removing the old mottled green patina to exposing bare copper metal. A brighter green patina then was applied.

Then the focus turned to the Capitol's basement. The space will host offices, a cafeteria, and the tour center for visitors. The dark basement will be brightened as windows are uncovered. Mechanical systems are being updated and moved out from under the building.

The east wing renovation was completed prior to the 2003 legislative session. The west wing renovation was completed prior to the 2004 legislative session. The south wing renovation will be completed prior to the 2006 session. The north wing construction is planned for the summer of 2007.
